Missional Grant for a Monthly Hot Lunch for our Heartside Neighbors
Back in March of 2019, we received funds to provide a hot meal once a month for eight Sundays at Heartside Ministry, to be served when the church service was over. Our first lunch took place on May 26, 2019.
We were all pretty happy with how it went and made some minor food quantity adjustments for next time.
Ada Fresh Market worked with us on getting the best deal we could on fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and we picked up the cookies.

We added cole slaw to the mix.
Each month, it was a great opportunity to get to meet new people and realize we were not that different from each other. Some volunteers wished there was more opportunity to sit down and talk to people. Attending the Heartside church service would be one way to spend more time with people but that wasn't always an option for folks.
We had difficulty finding volunteer servers over the summer so our next lunch didn't take place until October 20, 2019.
We always made sure the musicians were fed 😊
Some volunteers were perfectly comfortable in this environment and others commented later on how they felt completely out of their element and were totally uncomfortable. Either way, I was happy that people agreed to serve and maybe begin to overcome some preconceived notions about people who were seemingly not like them.

We had another well-attended and appreciated lunch.
Due to January vacations, our next lunch took place on February 16, 2020.
This time we had some hilarious help from a couple of Heartside staff members.
We didn't know it at the time but this would be our last Sunday lunch. March rolled around and I became sick, Covid was spreading, and my last day at Heartside ended up being March 9 due to illness, Covid, and underlying health conditions. We never held another lunch on Sunday at Heartside Ministry. We still had funding for one more but it all still ended as well as it could. Thank you to the Community Church in Ada for funding our lunches and social interactions with the Heartside neighbors.
